Charles awoke in confusion on a bed that was not his own. He was in an unused cell down the hall from Lúcia’s, surrounded by nuns and a doctor who had been summoned from a nearby clinic. The doctor was shining a penlight into his eyes. There was an uninflated blood-pressure cuff on his arm.

“Good, you’re awake,” the doctor said.

Charles blinked in bafflement and touched his sore, swollen lip, which he had bitten during his fit. His head was throbbing. “Where am I? What happened?”

“You’ve had a seizure. You’re at Santa Teresa. Do you have epilepsy, Father?”

“I don’t think so. Can I get up?”

“Not yet. Do you take any medications or have any medical conditions?”

“No.”

“Did you suffer any recent blows to the head?”

“No.”

“I’d like to take you to the hospital for some tests.”

“No, no, I couldn’t do that. I have a flight to catch this evening. I teach in the morning.”

“In London.”

“Yes.”

“Well, you will probably be fine to travel. Sometimes people have one seizure, and they never have another. Time will tell, but I advise you to see your doctor as soon as possible.”

“Yes, yes, of course. Thank you.”

The doctor checked his blood pressure one more time and said, “Please stay still for a while longer.”

Sister Madalena came forward and said, “When you are able, Sister Lúcia would like to see you before you depart.”
